SONIA ZHANG is an PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at the New School. Her current research interests revolve around loneliness: on the one hand, how loneliness has become formulated as a psychological and public health problem since the 20th century; on the other hand, how social roboticists in Europe and East Asia propose alternative understandings of loneliness by creating technologies of love and care. Before her studies, she spent a year working with NGOs in China, did some ethnographic research on rural development and education, and worked at a restaurant in Tokyo. Zhang completed a BA in Human Sciences at the University of Oxford.
