JOAN JOHNSON is the director of the Milwaukee Public Library. She is the first African American woman and the fourth woman overall to be named library director. Johnson studied interior design and art at UW-Madison and worked as a freelance designer for theater and film sets before pursuing her master’s in library science in Seattle. She joined the administration of the Milwaukee Public Library in 2006 after working 15 years for the Seattle Public Library System. As director, Johnson has aimed to expand the digital resources the library provides to the public, including the launch of a hotspot lending program in 2020.
