Insecurity is the theme of this year's annual conference hosted by the Center for 21st Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This year's conference proposes the concept of “insecurity” as one of the governing logics of economic, political, and social life in the West at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. Insecurity picks up on, and challenges, several key concepts of 21st century studies, especially “precarity,” “securitization,” and “resilience.” Conference panels and plenary talks will address the various forms, causes, and effects of effects of insecurity on the contemporary global stage.

Confirmed plenary speakers for the conference are: Jennifer Doyle (UC Riverside), Annie McClanahan (UC Irvine), Mark Neocleous (Brunel University London), Naomi Paik (Illinois), and Saskia Sassen (Columbia).

#InsecurityC21 Image Challenge!

This year we are inviting our conference attendees to engage in a little friendly competition by sending us pictures of the "insecurity" you see around you: whether that's a photo of the external world or illustrations of the internal, we want to see them.

To enter: Post your picture on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, and tag C21 using the official conference hashtag #InsecurityC21. C21 will be choosing several to win a final prize by the conference.

Only submissions that credit the original photographer or artist (even if it’s you) will be accepted. Prizes will only go to those who are registered for the conference.

Places to Eat in Milwaukee

Looking for somewhere to grab dinner or a drink after the conference? We compiled a list of some popular local restaurants and bars on Milwaukee's East Side.

Register for the Conference

While the conference is free and open to the public, we do ask all attendees and presenters to register in advance. Registration helps us estimate attendance in order to better plan for seating, breakfast/lunch orders, and hotel arrangements.
